His timeline

Eighty years, mostly told through jobs and vehicles, because that's how he told them.

1. 1934Born on 23 January in Gattu, then part of Raichur district.
2. 1945Lost his mother to TB. He was about eleven.
3. 1946Rejoined school, after years of looking after his little brother.
4. 1953Passed his 10th class, the Matric.
5. 1954Joined the Government Technical College, Hyderabad, for a Diploma in Electrical Engineering. Fees: Rs 150, lent by his father's boss.
6. 1957Graduated and joined Indian Railways in Jabalpur as a Progress Supervisor. Married Sulochana Bai on 9 May.
7. 1959First child, Lalitha. Transferred to Hyderabad as Electrical Inspector for Construction.
8. 1963Instructor for Coil and Winding at the BHEL training school, Hyderabad.
9. 1965Inspector for Projects, BHEL factory.
10. 1971Senior Engineer for Projects, Bokaro. Known around town as his children's father.
11. 1978Back to Hyderabad as Manager for Projects.
12. 1989First car: a second-hand black Ambassador, Rs 30,000. It gave him a lot of trouble.
13. 1991Took voluntary retirement, two years early.
14. 1992A white Maruti 800, after a three-year wait. He wanted brown.
15. 1999A white Esteem. Sold later, because the seats sat too low for my grandmother.
16. ⋯Still to fill in: the Santro Xing, the i10, and fifteen years of life.
